Mad Rock, Bay Roberts

As I have mentioned previously, I’m endevouring to explore areas that are a little off the beaten path. On May 31st, we decided to set out for Mad Rock, part of the Bay Roberts Shoreline Heritage Walk. To get here, turn off by Jungle Jim’s in Bay Roberts, and keep going until the road ends at the tip of the peninsula.

Don’t mind the signs that say something to the effect of “road not maintained, use at own risk”. It’s a great gravel road and completely rideable on almost any type of bike.

Lovely gravel road!

When we got out to the point, we realized that we were finally able to get a decently close shot of the iceberg we were chasing around all afternoon. Unfortunately I only had my cellphone and so the quality is not great.

With a cell phone camera it just looks like a misshapen marshmallow.

Fortunately the bikes were not as precariously perched as this picture would lead you to believe!

Mad Rock has some really interesting rock formations, I tried to get a good picture, but again…cellphone.

I think this area is called “The Three Sisters”

If you venture out this way, you absolutely MUST stop at the Mad Rock Cafe for a bite to eat. This charming cafe is lively decorated and full of antiques.  They serve delicious Newfoundland home-style meals like fish cakes, toutons and pea soup, and the service is excellent. Though located in an out-of-the-way spot, it’s quite busy and I can understand why!

I’m kind of disappointed in the fact that we didn’t get to do any hiking in the area because it was late in the day and the wind off the water was bone-chillingly cold. That being said, Bay Roberts is less than 100km from St. John’s, so I’m sure there will be another trip out here this summer…with a better camera!
